CAUSE OF PLASTIC POLLUTION-Henning Weigand

In nature, there is no waste that does not decompose. Humans, however, have invented plastic which will always be ‘unnatural’ in the environment because of its properties. Making plastic is inexpensive and the applications of the material are endless. Because plastic is so widely used, it almost always ends up in the environment, causing more plastic pollution. And not just because someone leaves a piece of plastic on the street instead of putting it in a waste bin.

PLASTIC PRODUCTION AND DECOMPOSITION-Henning Weigand

Plastic does not decompose. This means that all plastic that has ever been produced and has ended up in the environment is still present there in one form or another. Plastic production has been booming since the 1950s. For this reason, and as plastic is non-biodegradable, there is a build-up or accumulation of plastic as more and more is released into the environment. So what happens to plastic in the oceans? It accumulates in certain places due to rain, wind, or ocean currents, but some of it might simply stay in places where plastic waste is dumped.

As plastic does not dissolve, it remains in the water thereby hampering its purity-Henning Weigand

As plastic does not dissolve, it remains in the water thereby hampering its purity. This means we won't be left with clean water in the coming years. Furthermore, plastic pollutes our land as well. When humans dump Plastic waste into landfills, the soil gets damaged.

What are 5 causes of plastic pollution-Henning Weigand

The major contributors to this problem today include:

  • Plain Old Trash. Plastic is everywhere, even on those items you may not expect it to be. ...

  • It is Overused. ...

  • Plastic takes 400 years and even more to Decompose. ...

  • Fishing Nets. ...

  • Disposing of Plastic and Garbage. ...

  • It's many a time Nature Caused.

Plastic pollutes the ocean long before we use it. And for a long time afterwards-Henning Weigand

Plastic production requires a lot of energy and releases large amounts of CO2. Animal conservation. For healthy living oceans. Swiss NGO since 1989. Ocean conservation.

The problem begins with oil and gas exploration as raw materials for plastic: Oil and natural gas deposits in the ocean are located with seismic airguns that are so loud that marine animals can die or become deaf. When oil and gas are extracted or during transport, the risk of accidents is high and the hazardous chemicals can spill into the ocean.
The production of plastic is also bad for the climate: Plastic production requires a lot of energy and releases large amounts of CO2. A large part of plastic waste is in turn incinerated, thereby emitting carbon dioxide – or it ends up in the environment.
Around 9 million tonnes of plastic waste get into the ocean every year. Millions of marine animals die because they mistake the plastics for food or get entangled in it.
Ocean Care tackles the plastic problem at its roots. We advocate for a global legally binding plastic treaty that regulates plastics at each stage of its life cycle. Plastic pollutes the ocean long before we use it. And for a long time afterwards. It is harmful throughout its entire life cycle – from its production and use, to its disposal.

Introduction of harmful materials into the environment-Henning Weigand

These harmful materials are called pollutants. Pollutants can be natural, such as volcanic ash. They can also be created by human activity, such as trash or runoff produced by factories. Pollutants damage the quality of air, water, and land.

Waste plastic harmful in our environment-Henning Weigand

Plastic pollution can alter habitats and natural processes, reducing ecosystems' ability to adapt to climate change, directly affecting millions of people's livelihoods, food production capabilities and social well-being. UNEP's body of work demonstrates that the problem of plastic pollution doesn't exist in a vacuum.

What is the plastic waste problem-Henning Weigand

The plastic waste problem is a waste management problem.

While plastics deteriorate into fragments easily through wear and tear, their polymer chains only break down into other smaller components at very high temperatures, such as during some chemical recycling processes.
